Dyslexia and Related Disorders Reporting Study Survey
October 15, 2018
TO THE ADMINISTRATOR ADDRESSED:
SUBJECT: Dyslexia and Related Disorders Reporting Study Survey
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) seeks to understand the reporting procedures used by school districts and open-enrollment charter schools regarding the dyslexia indicator in the Texas Student Data System (TSDS) Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS). Specifically, TEA seeks to ensure that the guidance given to local education agencies (LEAs) is sufficient in ensuring that students identified as having dyslexia or related disorders are accurately reported. To do so, TEA has contracted with American Institutes for Research (AIR) to conduct a study investigating the processes and procedures currently used by school districts, open-enrollment charter schools, and their campuses to identify and report students with dyslexia and other related disorders. The purpose of this letter is to notify districts and charter schools of the need to participate in a brief survey as part of the larger study.
About the Survey
As part of this study, AIR will survey all districts and charter schools in the state to understand the dyslexia identification and reporting procedures currently used in public schools across the state.
How Will My District or Charter School Be Involved?
Beginning on October 15, 2018, AIR will survey districts and charter schools via an online survey. The survey link will be sent electronically to the email address provided in AskTED or on the district or charter school website. The email will contain a survey link and instructions suggesting which staff members should participate in the survey. The survey will take approximately 15–25 minutes to complete, and the administration window will remain open until November 5, 2018. Participation by districts and charter schools is expected. All responses will be kept confidential to the extent permitted by law.
Why Should My District or Charter School Be Involved?
TEA is seeking to gain knowledge of the processes and procedures used by districts and charter schools to identify and report students with dyslexia and other related disorders. District and charter school personnel offer unique and valuable insight into the methods and procedures used by school personnel to report students with dyslexia and other related disorders in TSDS PEIMS. Data provided from the perspective of districts and charter schools will help to inform future guidance provided by TEA.
How Will Survey Responses be Used?
We expect that this study will provide critical feedback about the reporting procedures used by school districts and open-enrollment charter schools regarding the TSDS PEIMS dyslexia indicator and will enable TEA to provide improved guidance and support regarding TSDS PEIMS dyslexia reporting procedures.
